"The Joy Luck Club"
  • mah jong - matching game played by 4 players
  • novel made up of short stories and there will be quizzes
  • Jing learned about her mothers story
  • Jing - Mei's mother died 2 months ago, her father thinks she died because of her own thoughts because she was depressed
  • Suyuan Woo (Jing's mom) died from a cerebral aneurysm
  • Suyuan started the San Francisco version of the Joy Luck Club in 1949, Two years before Jing was born.
  • Mah - Jong is a type of board game
  • Kweilin , Jing thought was big peaks with white mist on top
  • Jing hated the people and the military and hates how they made Kweilin an unhappy place to her anymore
  • Kuomintang - the military
  • Cities - Kweilin, Chung King, and Shanghai
  • Each week they would host a party to raise money and lift everyone's spirits
  • All the different families sit at different tables
  • At the parties the Joy Luck Club would play a game, feast, and talk about things that happened and stories people have until morning
  • Each week thy would think its a "new year" and forget about the past
  • Suyuan left Kweilin because japan started to invade
  • She took clothes, food, and baby/babies with her.
  • The one baby she brought with her was Jing - Mei
  • The Joy Luck Club wants Jing to take her mothers spot on the table.

"Scar"-An-Mei Hsu-Scar (2014)
  • An-Mei's mom took s sharp knife and cut a piece if meat from her arm and put it into the soup
  • The soup they made was an ancient tradition to try to cure Popo
  • "You must peek off your skin, and that of your mother, and her mother before her until there is nothing. No scar, No skin, No flesh"
  • Popo got sick - swollen like an overripe squish
  • Auntie has a very bad temper with children
  • Shou - longevity (long life)
  • Popo told stories to teach stories
  • Grandmother called the mother a ghost
NOTES FROM ASHA (?):
-her grandmother said that An Mei's mother is a ghost shes not dead but she was forbidden to talk about her
-Popo is the grandmother of An-Mei
-Popo is very sick
-An Mei's father is a picture on the wall she has never seen him before
-Her auntie said her mother married a man named Wu Tsing, who had a wife, 2 concubines and other bad children
-Concubine~ A women who lives with a man of a lower status
-Settee~ a couch
-An-Mei's mom is described as a "pretty woman with her white skin and oval face, not too round like Aunties or popos and a long white neck"
-An-Mei got her scar on he neck from soup that spilled forward and onto her neck
-Popo would pour cool water over the burn until An-Mei could fall asleep, in the morning Popo would peel off the dead skin, that left a scar
-Popo died from her illness

"The Red Candle"
  • Lindo's marriage was horrible, then they eventually were divorced
  • Later Tyan-yu married the servant girl
  • After the three babies were born her husband gave her bracelets
    of 24 caret gold
  • Lindo complains about her own daughter
  • The candle blew out on a very stormy night
  • 14 caret gold isn't really gold to the Chinese

  • they stayed in a four story building
  • every floor was something different
  • tay was the old guy

"The Moon Lady"
  • Ying-Ying St.clair
  • Ying-Ying's Daughter doesn't lection
  • Wushi in 1918
  • Moon Festival
  • 2 half sisters
  • Grandmother told her to girls are suppose to stand still
  • thought of her grandmother as a blessing and didn't think of her feelings
  • They eat live shrimp
  • they fish with a bird
  • Ying-Yang watched the women prepaired diner
  • theyre family was on a boat
  • ying-yang smeared blood on her own dress
  • she fell in the water
  • saved by a fishers boat
  • she was separated from her family
  • found a performance at the moon festival on the story of the moon lady
  • ran to the stage when it was done and asked the moon lady her wish
  • her wish was to be found
  • she found out the moon lady was made up and all of the stories she was told were false

Rules of the Game

  • Waverly Jong, the narrator of this section, explains that she was six years old when her mother taught her "the art of invisible strength," a strategy for winning arguments and gaining respect from others in games.
  • Waverly and her two brothers live on Waverly Place in San Francisco's Chinatown.
  • The children delight in the sights, sounds, and smells of Chinatown, the sweetness of the pasty red beans, the pungent smell of the herbs doled out by old Li, and the sight of the blood-slippery fish that the butcher guts with one slice
  • .in the story wavelry plays the game chest which she was so good at playing that game no one wanted to play with her.they were at a christmas party.waverly wanted to be in the tournament for playing chest but her mom didnt want her to play
  • .so she told her mom that she didnt want to do it anymore because she would lose but her mom told her to play which she did that because she knew her mom would let her do it if she told her that
  • .when she started playing she won and got famous so her mom told her friends
  • .waverly got mad because she thought that her mom was gettin the credits.
  • wavely got mad and ran away and hid.when she came back to the house her mom and the family acted she was not there.
  • the color red means happiness
  • family members are Waverly , mei mei , and little sister
  • Vincent got a chess set for christmas
  • Waverly learned how to play chess from her brother
  • she went to the playground and met an old man named lou who was really good a chess
  • Waverly became the Chinatown Chess Champion

The Voice from the Wall
  • Lindo got pregnant
  • She had a misscariagge
  • every night there was a girl next door screaming and crying
  • the girl got kicked out
  • she snuck back in to her house
  • her and her mom got in a fight that made up and said atleast shes not dead!
  • lindo wonders if her life is worse

Half and Half
  • Rose watches her mother An-Mei sweep around the white leatherette Bible, once her mother's, but now used to prop up a table leg
  • Rose thinks about how to tell An-Mei that she is getting divorced from her husband, Ted Jordan
  • She knows her mother will tell her to save the marriage, but she knows she can't
  • Rose remembers back to when her mother "lost her faith"
  • The day the Hsu family went to the beach and Bing, the youngest, drowned is the day she lost her faith
  • Everyone felt guilty for Bing's death

Two Kinds
- Jing Mei Woo's mother thought that Jing could be a Chinese Shirley Temple
- the mom criticizes her daughter about her hair saying " you look like a negro Chinese "
- Jing Mei believed that soon she would become perfect and her mother and father would adore her
- Every night after dinner they would sit at the kitchen table and her mother would give her new test
- Jing Mei hated the test her mother gave to her
- Three days after her mom watched the Ed Sullivan Show Jing's mother told her about her piano schedule
- Old Lady Chang did not smell good and did not look good either
- Jing takes piano lessons from Mr. Chang

"Four Directions"
-Waverly and her mother met at the four directions restaurant
-The doctors said that her mother at the age of 69 has the blood pressure of a 16 year old and the "strength of a horse".
-Rabbits don't like being criticized
-Every time Waverly talked about rich her mom changed the subject
-Waverly's house is full of fun and love
-The first time she felt her mother hit a nerve was when Waverly was ten years old
-When she was younger, Waverly was arguing with her mom and they weren't talking to each other than she thought that
she would trick her mom and talk to her first but her mom tricked her and changed it around on her
-She continued to play chess but never with the same feeling of supreme confidence
-When she lost to the guy that she had easily beaten she stopped playing all together
-Her mom destroyed her first marriage with Maruin Chen

"Without Wood"
  • Rose was told by her mother she was without wood, that she listened to too many people
  • "A girl is like a young tree, you must stand tall and listen to your mother standing next to you. that is the only way to grow strong and straight but if you bend to listen to others, you will croak."
  • When Rose asks Ted to come to the house to show the damage to the garden, she gives him the divorce papers and when he says "ill let you have a month so you have time to find a place" Rose finally stops listening to people and says she is staying here and that ted is leaving, which shows

Rose finally stopped ''bending''.
-there's a guy named old mr. Chpb he's a gudean
-old Mr.Cho is scary Chinese Freddy
-Her mom wants her to eat more
- She stops him with a vodo doll
- She doesn't want him to have kids
- The pen was from Christmas
- She has a check to get $10,000
- He calls and says he wants the papers signed which is Ted
-At the end she stands up to him and says she wants the house

"Best Quality"
-Before Jing Mei's mom died, Jing was given her "life's importance" (a jade pendant on a gold chain)
-Her mom was 71
-Suyan complains about the tenants who lived on the second floor- she is the landlord
-Suyan was accused of killing a cat
-From Jing's youth, cooking crabs is a memory that "haunts" her
-Jing doesn't like crab
-Auntie Lindo scolds Suyan for wearing a red shirt because it was "too young"
-Waverly is concerned about where Jing gets her hair cut because the guy is gay and could have aids

"Magpies"
-Roses marriage is falling apart
-An Mei's mom described as "decayed flesh, evil, rotted to the bone"
-"If you cry, your life will always be sad"
-Her mothers brother was shouting "you want to take your daughter and ruin her life as well"
-"You should already be gone"
-She raised her daughter the opposite of how she was raised
-After the funeral her mom went back to tientsin
-She tells An-Mei about the turtle that was there when she was a kid too
-The turtle tells her "if you cry, your life will always be sad"
-The turtle open its mouth and then magpies came out which are birds of joy.
-The aunts and uncle are saying that if she goes with her mom she will never be able to lift her head again
-When she was leaving she saw her brother crying rally hard because of anger and scared ness
-She said after she saw her brother like that she knew what her uncle said was true and she could not keep her head lifted

"Waiting Between the Trees"
-In china the guest bedroom is the best
-Lena and her husband are known as "arty-tecky"
-When ying-ying was a child she was wild and stubborn
-Ying-Ying family was one of the richest in wushi
-Lena's wisdom is compared to a "bottomless pond"
-Ying-Ying means clear reflection
-Ying-Ying first husband was her aunts husband friend (family friend)
-Ying-Ying compared herself to a tiger
-Ying-Yings husband left her to live with a opera singer
-Ying-Ying killed her baby before it was born because she hated her husband so much
-Ying-Ying knew she would marry her second husband because she liked his name


"Double Face"
-Waverly is afraid to have her 2nd honeymoon in china cause she thinks the Chinese would think she is one of them instead of an outsider
-According to Lindo the "best combination" is American circumstances and Chinese character
-Lindo is sad at the hair salon because her daughter criticizes her as if lindo wasn't there
-Lindo and waverly look the same because they have the same cheeks
-Lindo didn't look happy when she arrived in American for the first time because the plane took 3 weeks and support everywhere before coming to america
